design narrative

The goal of this project was to design and produce a type specimen book to showcase the Frutiger Serif typeface. It contains a cover, spine, title page, table of contents, three chapters of content, and a colophon. Within this book, Frutiger Serif is used exclusively to show its various styles and possible applications. Frutiger® Serif is a re-envisioning of Meridien, a typeface first released by Deberny & Peignot during the 1950s. The design for this book was inspired by vintage botanical illustrations and charts, a theme that highlights the unique features and history of Frutiger® Serif. All illustrations were hand drawn with pen and then digitized. Frutiger® Serif has a strong variety of weights and styles, which is reflected in many of the layouts used in older botanical texts. The color scheme is limited, which places focus directly on the content of the book and the illustrations while staying true to the design style.
